Description

Characters and Connections is a textbook for advanced-level English learners in 103A-level Cegep courses. It is also suitable for the college Introduction to English (ICE) course offered in Quebec English colleges. The learning activities enable students to develop a better understanding of English-language literature and culture by responding thoughtfully and critically to literary works. Students learn about literary structure and devices, and analyze stories from the 19th, 20th, and 21st centuries and a variety of classical and contemporary poetry. The writing activities are an important feature, inviting students to practice analytical and creative writing inspired by the texts. The texts feature a wide range of themes and literary styles, and are written by Canadian, American, and British authors. The later sections of the textbook include instruction on and models for writing, oral presentations, grammar, and vocabulary.

Editorial Reviews

"Great diving board for discussing topical issues. Really interesting activity ideas. The choice of stories is solid. I would feel comfortable trying out almost all of them."

--Sophie C. Nadon, College Ahuntsic

"I like the flexibility of the jigsaw activities. If I have time, I will definitely use them. However, if time is short, I can always pick and choose and focus on the ones I want."

--Christine Lalonde, Cegep de Sainte-Foy

"A resounding yes! I am very impressed with the selection of literary works and the corresponding literary focus for each unit. I have not used a textbook with this course for many years, but I will use this one. I also love the sample essays. They are suitable in length, structure, and content. Thesis statements are nicely highlighted as well. I would DEFINITELY use these models."

--Vicki-Ann Hugli, Cegep de Sainte-Foy

"It looks like the author really thought through the choice of texts and theory that goes with each text."

--Olga Zavitnevich-Beaulac, College de Maisonneuve

"All of the materials, including stories, poems, grammar, punctuation, spelling, and vocabulary totally meet and surpass the course objectives. I have used many of these poems and short-stories over the years and found they worked well in my class, and I am almost 100% sure they would work for almost everyone, if they themselves appreciate the material."

--Robert Jamieson, Cegep Edouard-Montpetit
