Description

This little book is a tale of two journeys, both in search for St. Nicholas and the meaning of Christmas. The first is the story of a young boy with a teddy bear and a lamp who sets out with Santa Claus to go back in time to a place where he can give the gift of his teddy bear. The little boy explores the lore of Christmas, going back to the very beginning, and takes the reader along for the ride. The boy, and the reader, will meet other children like Robert L. May (writer of Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer), Charles Dickens (A Christmas Carol), and Bishop Nicholas of Myra. The childhood of each one shaped their lives, their stories, and the traditions we hold dear today. The second journey is that of author Bruce Templeton, who shares true stories of his forty years assisting Santa Claus. He has been called upon many times to visit young and old alike who need comforting in difficult times. In this book, Bruce’s emotional journey ends with the birth of a child on Christmas Eve at the Janeway Children’s Health and Rehabilitation Centre in St. John’s, which gave him the inspiration for this book.

About the authors

Bruce Templeton and his family have been assisting Santa for over forty years. His working career took him and his wife, Paula, across Canada to open many of the ninety-six Bowring Little Shops. They have three children and five grandchildren. Following his retail years, Bruce joined the investment industry, and following a decade with a bank firm, he started an office in partnership with his son, Jim. His volunteer work includes St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, the St. John’s Board of Trade, Scouts Canada, and Rotary International. He is the only Canadian of the twenty-seven living Santas inducted into the International Santa Claus Hall of Fame, and he is also a Knight of St. Nicholas. That said, he gives credit to his family, especially Paula, who has spent hours in helicopters and has walked the entire parade route for years whispering the names of children to Santa, who then greets them from the top of the sleigh. While Bruce has won multiple awards, the making of memories for children is all that really matters, along with joining Santa with his doctor daughter, Christina, on Christmas Eve in the Janeway Children’s Health and Rehabilitation Centre.
